PETP vs PVDF material comparison

Compare PETP and PVDF by dimensions, moisture, chemicals and fabrication.

PETP and PVDF are both semi-crystalline engineering plastics, but they usually serve different screening questions. PETP is often considered for machined precision parts where stiffness, wear, moisture-related dimensional behavior and good machining character matter; PVDF is often considered for chemical-media service, fluid-system construction, weathering and weldable fabrication.

Quick screening

Start from the failure mode the component cannot tolerate.

Lean toward PETP when stiffness, dimensional control, wear, machining quality or cost-effective engineering blanks drive the design. Lean toward PVDF when chemical-media compatibility, fluid-system purity, weathering or welded construction controls the project.

LEAN TOWARD PETP

Stiffness, dimensions and machined precision

Prioritize rigid machined parts with defined tolerances, wear resistance and predictable moisture-related dimensional behavior.

LEAN TOWARD PVDF

Chemical media, purity and fluid systems

Prioritize exact-media compatibility, low-contamination supply routes, weathering or welded sheet and piping systems.

VERIFY FIRST

Humidity, chemicals, temperature and stress

Moisture uptake, media, temperature, pressure, load, permeation, welds and cyclic stress can overturn a family-level choice.

Core differences

Compare the complete dimensional and fluid duty, not one headline property.

These are polymer-family screening directions. Confirm each choice against exact grade data, supplied form, component geometry, joining route, exposure protocol and required declarations.

Engineering questionTypical PETP screening directionTypical PVDF screening direction
Polymer structure and main dutyA semi-crystalline engineering plastic commonly screened for stiff machined parts, wear and dimensional control from stock shapes.A semi-crystalline fluoropolymer commonly screened for chemical-media service, weathering and fluid-system construction.
Moisture uptake and dimensional stabilityPETP absorbs moisture and needs drying and humidity-aware processing; dimensions and mechanical behavior should be checked at the service humidity.Low moisture uptake and generally stable dimensions in humid environments, while exact tolerance, stress and section still need review.
Machining and precision partsOften chosen for machined components with tight tolerances, good chip formation and predictable finishing; crystallinity and annealing state matter.Machinable into fluid and structural parts, but chip behavior, heat management, dimensional control and weld geometry require exact review.
Chemical compatibilityCompatible with many aqueous and general environments, while solvents, aggressive media, concentration, temperature and stress remain decisive.Often screened for broad chemical-process duties, but no family-wide pass applies; swelling, permeation, stress and combined media still need review.
Heat, load, pressure and creepCan support many loaded mechanical parts, while modulus, creep, temperature limit, wall section and assembly load must be checked over time.Pressure-system and loaded-part decisions depend on grade, temperature, duration, geometry, joint design and applicable design rules.
Purity and extractablesRegulated-use or low-extractables evidence depends on exact grade, color, process, cleaning and supplier documentation.Purity-controlled grades and supply chains exist, but not every PVDF formulation or stock shape carries the same evidence.
Weathering and outdoor exposureOutdoor suitability depends on UV stabilization, color, stress, exposure duration and appearance requirements; check the exact grade.Frequently screened for outdoor or weathering duty; pigment, formulation, fabrication and required lifetime still need confirmation.
Stock shapes, fabrication and joiningAvailable as rod, sheet and tube for machining; confirm crystallinity, annealing, stock condition, size, residual stress and machining history.Available in multiple stock and system forms; confirm resin type, dimensions, welding route, liner or pipe construction and inspection requirements.
Material paths

Which applications justify deeper PETP or PVDF review?

Use the application examples as screening paths only. The exact drawing, grade, fluid history, joining method and required evidence determine final suitability.

PETP PATH

Precision, stiffness and wear control the part

PETP often enters machined mechanical components where dimensional control, rigidity and wear resistance dominate the design.

  • Machined gears, bearings, bushes and wear parts
  • Insulating and structural components with defined tolerances
  • Parts where moisture-related dimensional change must be predicted and controlled
  • Engineering blanks machined from rod, sheet or tube

PVDF PATH

Chemical media, fluid-system purity or weathering controls the project

PVDF often enters process systems where exact-media compatibility, low-contamination supply, outdoor exposure or weldable construction matters.

  • Chemical tanks, liners, pipes, valves and pump components
  • Qualified purity-controlled fluid paths and handling equipment
  • Outdoor equipment, cable-related parts and weather-exposed components
  • Welded sheet, pipe and fabricated assemblies with defined inspection

Exposure definition

Define the full humidity, cleaning and operating cycle.

Chemical labels and terms such as “moisture stable” or “high purity” are not test protocols. Humidity, temperature, pressure, stress, joints and contamination limits act together on the finished component.

Approval boundary: Material supply does not establish sterilization validation, medical suitability, food-contact approval or system purity. The responsible manufacturer must validate the exact grade and finished assembly.
01
Humidity and conditioning

Record service humidity, storage, drying history, moisture content at processing and the dimensional tolerance over the lifetime cycle.

02
Process fluid and cleaning chemistry

List every medium, concentration, impurity, cleaner, disinfectant, rinse and possible mixture or carryover.

03
Temperature, pressure and time

Record normal and upset temperatures, pressure or vacuum, dwell, heat-up, cool-down and lifetime cycle count.

04
Geometry, load, joints and acceptance

Include wall section, sharp radii, fits, preload, welds, seals, support spacing, then define dimensional, leak, extractables and documentation criteria.

Processing and procurement

Confirm that the grade, form, fabrication route and documents fit.

A plausible polymer family can still fail the supply path if the required dimensions, resin type, stock condition, joining method or declaration is unavailable.

PETP SUPPLY

Check crystallinity, annealing and stock state

Confirm rod, sheet or tube size, crystallinity, annealing, moisture history, residual stress and the machining condition expected for the part.

PVDF SUPPLY

Lock resin type and system form

Confirm homopolymer or copolymer route, stock shape, sheet, pipe, fitting, liner or fabricated assembly and its matching evidence.

FABRICATION

Plan machining, welding and inspection

Review tool heat, residual stress, balance of material removal, weld procedure, joint geometry, operator qualification and leak testing.

DOCUMENTATION

Match every claim to the supplied grade

Purity, extractables, flame, medical, food-contact, potable-water or sterilization records must match formulation, color, thickness and process.

Validation workflow

Complete four checks before material approval.

The family choice narrows the search. Final approval must resolve formulation, supply history, full exposure, joints and component geometry.

01

Define the dominant failure

Separate dimensional drift, wear, cracking, chemical attack, permeation, creep, leakage and contamination.

02

Lock the exact grade and form

Confirm formulation, color, process route, stock or system form, batch records and all required declarations.

03

Review geometry and fabrication

Check wall section, radii, fits, preload, machining history, welds, supports, seals and inspection access.

04

Test representative assemblies

Validate the actual humidity, fluids, cleaning, pressure, temperature, handling and lifetime cycles on production-relevant parts.

Frequently asked questions

PETP vs PVDF selection questions

Is PVDF always more chemically resistant than PETP?

No universal ranking applies to every medium and condition. Compare the exact fluid, concentration, impurities, temperature, pressure, duration, stress and joint configuration against grade-specific evidence.

Are PET and PETP the same material on this page?

No. PETP here means the semi-crystalline engineering-plastic form supplied as rod, sheet and tube for machining. Packaging-grade PET film and resin follow different routes and are not interchangeable without review.

Are all PVDF grades high purity or piezoelectric?

No. Purity records and piezoelectric behavior depend on formulation, manufacturing route, processing and supplied form. Request evidence for the exact grade and application.

Can PVDF replace PETP in a precision machined part?

Only after checking stiffness, dimensional tolerance, moisture behavior, wear, pressure, creep, temperature, fluid exposure, joints and lifetime cycles on the finished design.

Have a defined dimensional and fluid duty? Compare exact PETP and PVDF grades.

Send media, concentration, temperature, pressure, load, humidity, tolerance, cycle count, purity requirements, critical dimensions, quantity, fabrication route and required documents.
