What is PPSU?

An Amorphous Polymer for Heat, Steam and Impact-Demanding Parts

Polyphenylsulfone (PPSU) is an amorphous high-performance thermoplastic selected when a component needs a combination of toughness, hot-water stability, hydrolysis resistance and repeated sterilization capability.

Unlike a single universal material grade, the PPSU family includes general-purpose, healthcare, fluid-handling and modified grades. Resin choice, color, processing history and finished-part geometry can change the result, so the exact TDS and required compliance documents must be checked before release.

The stock examples on this page are natural amber PPSU rods, sheets / plates and tubes. They are starting shapes for machining, assembly and prototyping; confirm the actual grade, dimensions and stock condition during quotation.

01

Steam and hot-water service

Selected PPSU grades are used in components exposed to hot water, steam cleaning and autoclave cycles when the grade and part design are validated for the actual cycle.

02

Hydrolysis resistance

PPSU is considered for humid and aqueous service because the resin family can retain useful properties in hot-water environments; concentration, time and temperature still matter.

03

High impact toughness

Toughness is useful for handles, housings, trays and fluid parts that may see drops, repeated handling or assembly loads.

04

Machinable stock shapes

Rod, sheet / plate and tube allow the starting stock to be matched to turned, flat or annular finished geometries before machining.

Grade scope

Match PPSU to the Service and Documentation Requirement

PPSU performance is grade-dependent. Share the application, color, stock form and documentation target first; then confirm the exact resin, semi-finished condition and supporting files.

General-purpose stock

Unfilled PPSU

Medical or Sterilization Grades

Some PPSU grades are developed for medical devices and repeated sterilization. ISO 10993, USP, sterilization-cycle or other claims apply only when the specific grade and supplied condition are covered by the relevant documents.

  • Request the applicable compliance statement
  • Confirm cycle, cleaning chemistry and part design
Fluid and food-contact scope

Hot-Water and Contact Grades

Plumbing, laboratory and food-contact designs may require a formulation with specific extraction, pressure, chemical and regional compliance data. Do not infer approval from the PPSU name alone.

  • Define the contact medium and temperature
  • Confirm the required market and test standard
Modified materials

Reinforced or Specialty PPSU

Glass-fiber, mineral, color or other modified formulations can change stiffness, expansion, impact response, appearance and machining behavior. Treat them as separate materials during design review.

  • Not interchangeable with unfilled PPSU values
  • Confirm formulation and availability before sourcing

Technical selection checklist

Verify These Items Against the Exact PPSU Grade TDS

A general PPSU description is not enough for design release. Confirm the test method, specimen condition, sterilization cycle and supplied material condition together with each headline value.

Selection topic What to confirm Why it matters Quotation input
Temperature and steam Continuous, peak and cycling temperature; autoclave or steam profile Useful limits depend on stress, time, cycle chemistry and exact grade Temperature, pressure, cycle count and exposure duration
Mechanical load and impact Tension, compression, bending, impact, pressure and sustained load Creep, notch sensitivity and dimensional retention depend on load and time Load direction, magnitude, safety factor and service life
Hydrolysis and hot water Water temperature, humidity, pressure, contact duration and fluid renewal Hot-water performance is application-specific and can change with stress Fluid, temperature, pressure and required operating hours
Chemical and cleaning Disinfectant, detergent, solvent, concentration, temperature and duration Broad compatibility statements can hide grade-, color- and stress-specific limits Full chemical list and cleaning or sterilization process
Moisture and dimensions Humidity, conditioning, tolerance, flatness and inspection state Moisture, machining sequence and processing history can affect final dimensions Drawing, tolerance, datum and inspection environment
Appearance and color Natural amber, translucency, transparency, wall thickness and surface finish Appearance can vary with thickness, process, color formulation and material condition Reference sample, dimensions and acceptance standard
Documentation and compliance Grade identity, traceability, TDS, COA, sterilization and contact declarations Documents apply to the supplied grade, color, form and production lot Required report, certificate, market and lot information
Reference note: published PPSU values and compliance status vary by grade, color, processing method, thickness, production lot and operating conditions. Do not use one headline value as a universal component limit without the applicable TDS and finished-part validation.

PPSU applications

Applications That Need Toughness, Steam Resistance and Controlled Supply

These are application starting points for PPSU stock, not automatic approvals or certification claims. Confirm the exact material, process, sterilization cycle and documentation for each finished component.

Medical and sterilization equipment

Trays, instrument handles, housings, fluid connectors and reusable equipment parts where repeated steam, hot-water cleaning and impact resistance are design drivers. Medical suitability is grade- and documentation-specific.

Laboratory and analytical equipment

Housings, manifolds, carriers, fittings and precision supports that combine dimensional control with wet-process, cleaning or thermal exposure.

Hot-water and fluid handling

Tubes, valves, connectors, pump parts and plumbing components where hydrolysis resistance, low metal contamination and reliable hot-water service are important. Pressure, fluid and approvals must be checked separately.

Food-contact and consumer equipment

Reusable containers, process components and high-temperature consumer parts can use PPSU when the contact medium, cleaning cycle, color and regional compliance requirements are confirmed.

Aerospace and industrial interiors

Lightweight housings, brackets, insulation components and service parts where impact toughness and dimensional stability are needed alongside the project’s smoke, flame and traceability criteria.

PPSU, PEEK, PEI, PSU or POM?

Choose the Material That Matches the Dominant Requirement

No engineering polymer is universally better. Compare exact grades at the operating temperature, load, fluid, cleaning cycle, geometry and finished-part documentation requirement.

Choose PPSU when

Repeated steam or hot-water exposure, high impact toughness and hydrolysis resistance are dominant requirements, with the required grade documentation available for the finished design.

Consider PEEK when

Higher mechanical or chemical demands, wear-focused performance or a semi-crystalline material profile outweigh PPSU’s impact and sterilization balance.

Consider PEI when

Dimensional control, electrical insulation or a rigid amorphous material profile is the primary design driver and the actual cleaning or steam duty fits the selected PEI grade.

Consider PSU when

The application needs an amorphous sulfone polymer for warm-water, chemical or dimensional service, but does not require the full toughness, temperature or documentation scope of the chosen PPSU grade.

Consider POM when

The design is lower-temperature and cost-sensitive, with the required strength, friction and dimensional performance achievable without PPSU’s steam and hydrolysis focus.

Validate

Compare test method, temperature, pressure, impact, moisture, chemicals, sterilization, geometry, processing history and required documents before selecting the stock material.
