What is PEEK?

A Semi-Crystalline Polymer for Demanding Service Conditions

Polyetheretherketone is a semi-crystalline, high-performance thermoplastic considered when conventional engineering plastics no longer provide enough thermal capability, chemical resistance, mechanical retention or dimensional control.

The PEEK family includes unfilled, glass-fiber-reinforced, carbon-fiber-reinforced and bearing formulations. Reinforcement and fillers change stiffness, expansion, electrical behavior, wear response and machining characteristics.

Crystallinity, processing history, annealing, stock condition and component geometry can affect final dimensions and performance. Design values should be taken from the exact grade TDS and confirmed for the finished part.

No material is universally better. Compare the exact grades at the operating temperature and finished-component condition.

Choose PEEK when

Broad chemical resistance, low moisture uptake, toughness and machinable stock availability are primary requirements.

Consider PAI when

Elevated-temperature stiffness, creep control or specialized wear performance is the dominant design driver.

Consider PPS when

The required chemical and thermal performance can be met with a more cost-sensitive material system.

Consider PEI when

An amorphous material with electrical performance and dimensional control meets the lower-temperature service requirement.

The grade, stock form, processing history and inspection condition are as important as the polymer family.

What is the difference between unfilled and reinforced PEEK?
Unfilled PEEK provides a balanced combination of toughness, chemical resistance, electrical insulation and machinability. Glass- or carbon-fiber reinforcement changes stiffness, expansion, electrical behavior and machining response. Compare the exact grade TDS rather than applying one formulation's data to another.
Can every PEEK grade use the same continuous temperature limit?
No. Published temperature capability depends on the grade, load, geometry, test basis, exposure time and environment. Use the grade-specific TDS and validate the finished component under its expected service conditions.
Is PEEK resistant to every chemical?
No broad compatibility statement replaces an application review. Provide the chemical medium, concentration, temperature, contact duration and cleaning process so the exact grade can be checked.
Which PEEK grade should be considered for bearings?
Start with a bearing or wear formulation, then review pressure, speed, temperature, lubrication, counterface, surface finish, clearance and duty cycle. A single generic friction value is not enough to select the final grade.
When should stress relief or annealing be considered?
